The 3 WHY’s Behind Making Room

WHY #1: The Beginning

I have always been extremely organized. Decluttering my things while pretending I was on an organizing show was a favorite pastime. My childhood best friend says she would have become a hoarder had it not been for the “decluttering game” we would play in her room.

Fast forward many years and I graduated with a B.F.A. in Interior Design from Moore College of Art & Design. After graduation I moved to Spokane, Washington to escape the city and start an independent, outdoor active life. I had a business in Spokane helping clients declutter and organize. I also nannied, played violin in a for-fun orchestra and went on plenty of solo car camping trips.

Moving back to Baltimore in 2021 was something I thought I would never do. I realized being close to my family, friends and support system is what I need right now (even if I had to sacrifice being five hours from Glacier National Park).

WHY #2: The Passion

Starting Making Room is a continuation of my passion for interiors. The best part of doing what I do is helping people feel better in their homes and accomplish something they thought was too overwhelming.

My “Type A” brain likes things to be clean, organized and categorized. I am very practical with what I keep in my home and how I set things up and that translates seamlessly into helping clients set up their homes. My philosophies: If you don’t see it, you will forget about it. If you can’t get it easily, you will not use it, and if you’re not using it then why do you still have it?

WHY #3: The Logistics

A large part of why I started a business is because I go commercial salmon fishing with my family every summer in a tiny, remote village in Southwest Alaska and need the flexibility to take summers off.

I’ve been fishing since I was ten months old. Working in Alaska grounds me. I love taking a break from fast-paced modern life to recenter and refocus.. The things we have (clothes, tools, etc.) feel more significant because we can’t just drive to a store to get replacements. I’m reminded to be grateful for what I have and treat everything with care.

Because of my fishing schedule I work with clients September through May. I find this works with most schedules because many of us travel and enjoy vacation time in the summers!
